About the Project
The Fulfilling the Dream Fund
The Fulfilling the Dream Fund is a collaborative effort of national/regional/local funders who have come together to support, strengthen, and expand affirmative action, by which we mean the conscious and deliberate effort to dismantle the structures of racial and gender inequality and assist institutions to become more inclusive and democratic.
    Goals and Objectives:
  • Expand philanthropic support for affirmative action
  • Improve public understanding of systemic barriers to opportunity and the social advantages of increased minority access
  • Create more platforms to explore the nation's commitment to opportunity
The Dream Fund is managed by Public Interest Projects Inc., a public charity supporting the progressive social change work of foundations, private donors, and social justice organizations.

The director of the U.S. Office of Civil Rights explained in 1973:
"The premise of the Affirmative Action concept... is that systematic discrimination... has existed, and unless positive action is taken, a benign neutrality today will only preserve yesterday's conditions and project them into the future."
Although there has been some notable progress in the three decades since that statement was made-particularly for white women working in professions and trades-the data clearly shows how heartbreakingly far we remain from fulfilling our common dream of equality and embodying our shared pledge of "one nation... with liberty and justice for all."

Firelight Media received a grant from the national Fulfilling the Dream Fund to create a digital toolkit that addresses the history and ongoing debates surrounding affirmative action. The purpose of this website and the companion educational DVD/CD-ROM is to help you use these resources to find ways to put your time, money, and heart into moving affirmative action forward and preventing a return to yesterday.
